Sorry I tend to disappear over the weekends. I’ll see if I can work out a schedule for doing posts on them more often, but in the meantime here’s something short to tide y’all over (because I know you guys totally just… like sit in front of the monitor waiting for me. At least that’s what I tell myself to keep living).
These Song Spotlights are going to be new posts I’ll be doing every so often, mainly when I feel like it or have a song I want to talk about (or need filler!), and you can also bet on other forms of Spotlight posts in the future.
So to start off our first Song Spotlight, I want to bring your attention to Theme of Ghost Rider from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Have a listen:
Before I talk about this song specifically, first let me say… Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s soundtrack as a whole isn’t that impressive in my opinion. While they’re nice songs, the majority of them I felt were fairly uninspired electronic songs, and most of them are generic. Certainly they fit the characters, but I still felt that as songs, on their own they are lacking; they’re only background music. Granted, Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s background music changes rapidly to the characters who are actually fighting, so the focus certainly isn’t on individual songs in the game itself.
However, there are definitely a few huge exceptions, songs that are really great on their own. Ghost Rider’s is one of them.
It opens with almost stereotypical biker guitar — an excellent intro for a flaming skeleton on a motorcycle — and quickly shifts over to higher-pitched, harsher guitar, which I always thought really went well with Ghost Rider’s demonic background (same with the brief yelling vocals heard throughout the song). The song sounds distinctly Ghost Rider, which is good for a character theme on a soundtrack like this, but I think its construction is good enough that it’s an excellent, rockin’ theme on its own.
So tell me, what do you think of this song? Have you heard it in-game before, or is this your first listen? Do you think it fits the character? Also, I guess I’m curious what you think of the overall Marvel vs. Capcom 3 soundtrack (from both versions of the game). I’ll probably do a few more of these on Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in the future to cover the other themes I liked.
